Axis - Truth & Reconciliation Day 2021

Truth and Reconciliation Day is September 30, 2021. This day recognizes the importance of reconciliation and ensuring that the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools is never forgotten.

A Day of Reflection

The Canadian government recently passed legislation to make September 30th a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Like all Canadians, this day provides an opportunity for everyone to recognize the legacy of residential schools. This may present itself as a day of quiet reflection or participation in a community event.

This new statutory holiday serves to honour the Survivors, families and communities impacted by residential schools in Canada and the continued trauma faced by Indigenous communities throughout the country. It is one of the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and a reminder that reconciliation is still ongoing.

It is encouraged to use this day to reflect on the role of reconciliation, to learn more about First Nations communities and to understand Canada’s history with Indigenous peoples.
